When hand lotions, sanitizers, perfumes, dirt, and body oils accumulate on the surface of your jewellery, it can make the metal appear dull. Even the most high-quality diamonds and gemstones can lose their fire!
We have put together some quick tips and tricks on how to safely clean your jewellery at home. From a simple home remedy to specialized products from our Hagerty line, you can give your jewellery the proper care it needs!
Tip #1: Inspect your Jewellery
Routine jewellery inspection is a great way to increase the longevity of your jewellery.
Before cleaning your piece, it is a good idea to look it over carefully. Our everyday pieces can give way to wear and tear over time. Check your rings, look closely at the claws and stones. Are they still intact? Check your earring backs, are they tight and secure? How about the clasp on your chain or necklace?
If you think your items may need adjusting, do not worry! Herbins’ can help. We offer minor jewellery repair and adjustments in house.
Tip #2: At Home Remedy
It is simpler than you might think! Grab a toothbrush and some mild dish soap.
This technique is great for rings with stones and intricate jewellery with hard-to-reach places.
- Mix your dish soap with warm water in a bowl.
- Place your jewellery in the bowl and let it soak for a few minutes.
- Remove items from the solution and lightly scrub with a clean toothbrush.
- Rinse with warm water.
- Let pieces air dry or wipe dry with a dry towel.

Tip #3: Hagerty Jewel Clean

This liquid cleaning solution is great for gold, platinum, diamonds, sapphires, rubies, topaz, amethyst, peridot, aquamarine, and peridot!
All you have to do is dip your jewellery in the liquid solution for 2 minutes, and then use the provided brush to clean. Afterwards, you can rinse with water and wipe dry with a cloth or towel.
*Jewel Clean is not suitable for pearls, opals, or other porous stones.
Tip #4: Cleaning Silver Jewellery
Sterling silver jewellery can become tarnished over time, especially if the piece has come into contact with chemicals or polluted air.

Our Hagerty Instant Silver Clean is suitable for cleaning sterling silver and silver-plated jewellery. Silver Clean instantly removes tarnish, restoring shine.
Simply dip your jewellery for 5-15 seconds, rinse with water and wipe dry with a cloth or towel.
*Do not leave jewellery in Silver Clean for more than 15 seconds. Not suitable for jewellery with gemstones or diamonds.
Tip #5: Polishing Cloth

Our Hagerty Silver polishing cloth is specifically designed to clean and polish sterling silver, silver-plated, gold jewellery, and silverware. The white cloth is treated with a special formula that is gentle yet thorough in cleaning away tarnish, grime, fingerprints, body oils, and cosmetics. It also imparts a tarnish-resistant barrier, preventing tarnish in the future!
Use the cloth to gently wipe or polish your jewellery.
Tip #6: Preventing Tarnish in the Future

Our Hagerty Anti-Tarnish Strips neutralize tarnish-causing sulfides and other airborne pollutants. They can be used for silver, gold, copper, brass, nickel, bronze, and tin.
Place the strips in an enclosed space with the jewellery pieces (like a jewellery box).
Use one strip for every 30 cubic cm’s of space and replace the strips every 6 months.
