What better way to celebrate May and the blossoming flowers of Spring than with the lush green, emerald birthstone!? Loved for centuries by people of all walks of life for its rich and vibrant green, Emerald is truly a classic stone. Described by Romans as “nothing greens greener,” this stone’s colour is said to relieve stress and strain. Reminiscent of beautiful landscapes, like that of Ireland, the ‘Emerald Isle’, Emerald is said to give its wearer the ability to see the future, reveal the truth or falsehood of a lover’s vow, and make the wearer an eloquent speaker.
Emerald is the most well-known stone of the beryl family, which also includes Aquamarine and Morganite. It also requires the most care of the beryls. Rating at a 7.5-8 on the Mohs hardness scale, it is far more susceptible to scratching and other wear than diamond. Also, because of the way that emeralds form, they are more likely to have small fractures, called feathers. Usually, surface fractures are filled to improve the visual clarity of the stone and avoid any further fracturing or breaking, and thus you should be careful when taking care of your emeralds.
As with most jewellery, the best and most effective way to clean your emerald pieces at home is with a soft-bristled toothbrush, warm water, and a bit of mild soap. Avoid exposing your emerald jewellery to heat and harsh chemicals. Emeralds are susceptible even to the hot water and harsh soap sometimes used for washing dishes!
Despite the extra care your emeralds require, they are always a great choice and a stunning colour for any occasion. Wear your emeralds with pride, May babies!
