An organic gem that grows in both fresh- and saltwater around the world, pearls are truly fascinating. For a time, pearls were said to be teardrops from heaven or products of dragons’ brains – and thus have been prized stones for centuries. Although we now know how pearls form, and indeed can induce the process ourselves, the lustrous sheen and uniqueness of every pearl still fascinates us. Long associated with themes of humility and innocence, the pearl’s meaning is “sweet simplicity”.
Keeping your pearls beautiful is easy, as long as good care is taken! They are a very soft gem, so you should always store them separately from other stones and metal jewellery to prevent scratches. Anything from a plastic bag to cosmetics can damage the shine and surface of your pearls, so we advise you to put on any perfumes or makeup before your pearls. The best way to clean them is with a soft damp cloth.
Here at Herbin’s, we also celebrate June babies with the Rhodolite garnet! A perfect blend of red and purple, this beautiful stone is often said to hold meanings of hope, courage, and healing. Derived from the Greek word meaning “rose-like”, this pinkish-purple stone is more brilliant in sparkle than the common garnet. Said also to “light up the night” with its luminescent sparkle, rhodolite garnet has been popular as a talisman and protective stone which protects its bearer from disaster.
Rating a 7-7.5 on the Mohs scale, rhodolite garnet is suitable for daily wear in any piece of jewellery. As this gem is rarely fractured, and thus is not usually filled, your rhodolite garnet jewellery is usually safe in an ultrasonic cleaner. For at-home care, however, a bowl of warm water with mild dish soap and a soft bristled toothbrush brush will bring your sparkle back to full brilliance.
Whatever gem you choose, June babies, you’re sure to make a statement with your jewellery!
